I
bought this book for a sonnet--err song ($3) during one of my forays at
a local flea market. Not bad for an 1878 illustrated edition of The
Complete Works of the Bard, eh?
“Where were you in ‘86 EDSA Revolution?” This caught my eye while on a jeepney cruising along the Quezon Bridge near Quiapo a long, long time ago. It was written on a wall of an old dilapidated building along the Pasig river. The handwriting was crude. written in black paint, and whoever put it there and for whatever reason we will never really know. But it was a good question, come to think of it, for this year's 21st Anniversary of the People Power Revolution, an event that changed not only the history of the Filipino nation and its people but also proved to the world that change could be achieved peacefully. The people in the communist world soon followed thereafter as they emulated and learned the lessons of our unique form of ending a tyrannical regime without bloodshed. Thus, we Filipinos could lay a claim that we had a hand in the collapse of the Soviet Union and the communist bloc in the late 80s to the early 90s and in the process changed the lives of millions ...
The Stardust Resort and Casino, that historic 63 acres of fun on the famous Las Vegas Strip widely known for its big, big excesses in everything during its heyday was finally erased from the map at 2:33 A.M. on March 13, 2007. And She did it with a bang and in typical Las Vegas fashion complete with fireworks and an implosion that was watched by thousands of spectators who in the end have to scamper for their precious lives when the dusts and smoke of the Old Lady came running after them. LOL Another landmark in the ever- changing, neon- lit, money- powered gambling and entertainment capital of the world gone-- A victim of the dreaded Vegas curse: where fortunes could change hands overnight; where lives could be made or broken by the roll of the dice; where the only thing constant is --Change. But I am not a gambler so what do I care? Shhh, what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas... From Dust to Dust goes the legendary Las Vegas Casino STARDUST and its 48 years of memories ...
If you find the film clip below funny then there must be something wrong with your head. In this day and age, this kind of show which pokes fun at other people, races or statures in life has no place in a civilized society especially if the main aim is to earn some cheap laughs or two. I say, SHAME on the British Broadcasting Corporation (or shall we say, the British Bigotry Corporation?) for ever allowing this sketch to be shown on TV. It may be funny for some especially for the kind of people who patronizes this kind of comedy being served on their laps by Harry & Paul, but for every decent citizen of the world it leaves a bad taste in the mouth. If the people behind Harry and Paul think that they can get away with this particular brand of "British Humor" then they are mistaken for in reality the JOKE is really on them. Ernest Hemingway once wrote in his book and I quote, “Ask not for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for thee.’
